Printing houses specialized in the production of posters. By collaborating with renowned illustrators such as Lucien Lefèvre and Jules Chéret, printing houses such as Maison de Chaix produced various advertising posters that later became embedded in the collective memory.

The printing process, which involves methodically stamping different layers of color onto the same paper, represents the starting point for the development of commercial printing.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Painted and later printed advertising posters appeared during the 19th century. A practice born of the development of engraving and lithographic techniques, the production of posters through printing made it possible to disseminate advertising messages on a large scale. Mechanical advances in color printing, in particular, strongly contributed to the emergence of this new advertising field, which initially established itself as a form of artistic expression.

Posters transformed the urban landscape of cities, mobilized painters and printing houses, and asserted themselves as a popular visual expression that became embedded in the collective memory of communities.
